Title: New Medieval batch: The tournament.
Post by: Rhalius on June 24, 2012, 11:15:25
Medieval remains a popular theme, but with the recent few batches always being about a good and evil faction at war, I'd suggest to make the next one fully about tournaments.

This allows for battles, but also for festivities and civilians. At the same time, it pays hommage to medieval factions of the past by including plenty of them.
It's also a great opportunity for children to learn a bit of history in a playfull way.

Aside from new sets, several old tournament sets get reissued as part of a classic collection:
-3652 jousting knights. (fleur de lis and tower.)
-3654 Tournament tent. (Golden Swan knight.)
-2669 Jousting Knight with squires. (Yellow Dragon.)
-3265 Jousting knights. (Unicorn and classic falcon, possibly with shoes or boots and of course moveable hands.)

And on to new sets:

-Sword fight.
A square wooden fence arena for a knightly duel. Comes with a weapon rack with various melee weapons and flags for each knight.
Included clickies: Classic Lion knight, Classic Lion soldier, New Red falcon (recent batch) knight with soldier.

-Archery competition.
A medium sized set with four archery targets and four archers.
Included clickies: Forestman archer, Royal Lion archer, Yellow Lion archer and the Blue hooded archer.

-Royal Jousting tournament.
This is the largest set of them all.
Included is a large stage with a throne fit for a king, and a chair on each side of the throne for important guests.
A wooden jousting wall is included for the center, and a standard wooden fence is also included that is big enough to surround the tournament field.
Weapon racks are also included of course, and a barded horse for each knight, and a flag of their faction.
Included clickies: Swan King, Swan princess, Swan Herald, Red Dragon Knight, Red Dragon Herald, Royal Lion Knight, Royal Lion herald, Golden Unicorn Knight, Golden Unicorn herald,Golden Unicorn Noblewoman, Templar Knight, Templar Herald.

-Audience.
Six medieval civilians to watch the battles, a mixture of men, women and children with accesoires.

-Tournament tent of the Red Falcon.
Tournament tent dedicated to a knight of the 90's red falcon. (faction from the first siege tower.)
Comes with a bed, a weapon rack and most things included from the swan tent, though this tent could be different in shape and have some different accesoires.
Comes with a barded horse as well.
Included clickies: Falcon knight, Squire and a child. (could be the knight's son.)

-Two jousting knights.
A small set that still comes with two fully armored knights with a barded horse and a squire, the cheapest way to set up a jousting tournament pretty much.
Comes with a Fleur de lis knight and squire, and Sir Christopher with a squire.

Overall it doesnt really matter which factions show up in which sets, but it could be great if discontinued factions would have a place in these tournament sets as well to bolster the variety of knights.

Of course I support this!

Though I'd rather have some of the knights or heraldries from a few series ago than the current Red Falcons or Yellow/Black Lions. For the tournament, I would most like newer knights - even if they are all different from one another and from those in older sets - that look the part for a tournament. Also, this would be a great place for the frog helm to be introduced! :)

Yes! You can even make a collectors theme from this. Like the bikers, horses and dogs.
"Collect all six different knights and have them compete in the tournament"

Amazing, really amazing! :wow:
I think this is a great idea, and I really like Markassius' idea to have a "collect them all" series.
I think this is a great way to look at the less militaristic side of the medieval period.

This is also a grand opportunity for new pieces,
Such as the frog helmet
(I assume you mean this? http://www.google.com/search?q=jousting+helmet&hl=en&client=safari&tbo=u&tbm=isch&source=univ&sa=X&ei=gyTrT7azC4XD2QXM68SqAQ&ved=0CF4QsAQ&biw=1024&bih=672#biv=i|2;d|V1kUvfmiLn-VOM: )
And seating area for the viewers, wooden stands.

I also hope to see more artifacts from regular medieval life,
Such as the fencing you describe for the tournament field.
I loved that fencing from a year or two ago, but I never got around to ordering some...

Heh yep, its pretty much a way to have all kinds of knights and battles, but they wouldnt be really violent and would just entertain people.  :)

Might leave some room for civilian sets too, with spectators, a well, maybe even a tavern, stables or such.

Regarding helmets, would be great to see new designs but one problem remains that they cant be too tight around the neck. Still leaves plenty of options though.
I'd really love to see them get this one right.

And I want those great helms to be better too, Rhalius! :)

Indeed, if Playobil gets it right it could look amazing!
I would guess though, if they ever did that
it would almost be a combination of Rhalius' second photo and the original helm.
Given the position of the Playmobil's eyes.

I would indeed like to see those helmets made...
But I really like the old sugarloaf helmet too.
The eye slits never really bothered me,
since Playmobil is supposed to be a little disproportioned.

Oh wow! I would looove a tavern,
And stables, but you could probably combine the two effectively.
Actually, I would love to turn the barn into a tavern/pub with the open window bakery wall.
Then use the barn side for stables, they are pretty nice anyway...
But the double arch could be put to very good use here. ;)
Then provide some benches and a table.
There is half your crowd!
Although I would shudder at the price, given the barn alone now costs $55 US. :o

Great ideas, Rhalius! :knight:  Some new jousting sets would be great and a fine addition to the medieval theme.  I think the idea of a "collect them all" series of six knights with different heraldry is a good and profitable one.  Each set could include a knight, squire, horse, and accessories.  Tents for each would be nice too, but that would probably put the sets at a price point that would be too high to sell the sets in any volume.

The Sugarloaf is one of my favourite designs too; I even have one for myself.

And also, tents and pavilions are an absolute must for this theme or just for the Medieval theme in general, and I really want to see these, as I've mentioned on all of my brainstorming threads! Having a new tournament theme would be the perfect place to add some. Assorted sets that each include a small pavilion, caparisoned warhorse, fully armoured knight, squire, stool for walking up to horse, and a lance/weapon rack for a few different themes would be ideal I reckon.

Tent, $10 Horse and Knight and Equipment, $7 Squire and Equipment, $3
About a $20 - $25 set.
Not bad, and certainly worth it. :)

It would be nice if it came with a table (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-51-0220)...
But there is so much more you could add. 8}

I would vote for the basics: Knight, Horse, Tent, Squire and armor and lance.
(maybe even take out the squires and make a generic one)
And in an add-on set add add:
A table, chairs, a chest, a wagon, additional equipment (and maybe a squire).
Then you can choose to really deck out your knights encampment or leave it simple.

That's a nice idea with the separate squire to save some money. Or there could be two squires with the equipment wagon/set.

The tent with the golden swan knight seems to pretty much cover all the things needed for a jousting knight at a tournament.
That was sold for around 20-25 euros I presume? not sure since it wasnt euro's yet back then.

What if they trimmed the concept of that set down a bit? no weapon rack and less weapons, no steps to get onto the horse either and only one flag with it, not two?
Just a sword, a jousting lance and perhaps one alternative weapon which could be different in each set.

Then the price would be a little higher than the other collecting items, but not too high. Content could differ a bit in each set.. like different kind of beds, chairs and chests could be used... While all still being the same price of course.

Alternatively, they could sneak in various tournament tents into the themed sets. Like having one as described above, another perhaps with a cart that the tent can be packed on, one set could come with a training field and two knights of the same faction and maybe a maid, another tent could come with a fence and some hay for the horse as well as a stableboy to take care of the horse and a cloth for the horse's back, etc.

I think we were talking about this somewhere in another thread - that they ought to make solid coloured tents or striped ones without specific faction emblems. This way, one could hang a faction banner or raise a flag if wanted, but the tents could be used for other factions as well. I think this would be the best way to go, even if the sets came with their own banners and flags, but the tent itself was free from faction emblazonment.

Believe me, it looks great,
I was tired of my green tent and black roof... ???
So I painted it all white and I love it!

It looks so much like a real, period tent...
And I should know, I have one.

I cannot find a picture of it,
but I'll hopefully get one soon to show you.
