Title: 1st British Chinese Regiment (1898-1901)
Post by: cheng on May 10, 2012, 01:23:24
The WEI HAI WEI (the very 1st British Chinese Regiment) opened fire on and bayonetted their own countrymen (the Boxers).
But the attacking Chinese Boxers who believed that they were immune to foreign bullets had to modify that view after massive casualties. :P

Wonderful customs, cheng, although the words WEI HAI WEI do sound as if they might be a Tyneside based Chinese contingent!

thanks Gordon!
you sound like you know much more...WEI HAI WEI ('HAI'=SEA) is a naval port on the north east coast of china...much like Tyneside is on the northest coast of Gt.B ;)

It almost certainly is, cheng!     But the reference to Tyneside is about accent.  Assuming that WEI HAI WEI is pronounced WAY HAY WAY, then it sounds very much like the Tyneside accent in "Haway the lads!", a term of encouragement on the sports field.  (If it doesn't sound like that, then the joke falls flat!   :(  :'( )

So busy laughing at what Gordon said (I lived on Tyneside for 7 years so the words sounded very familiar ) that I forgot to comment on your work Cheng :-[
Apologies for that and well done for creating yet more great customs
