Title: Mansions...?
Post by: Kelly on April 15, 2012, 02:58:52
What, asside from the color and patio, are
the differences in the Victorian and
grand mansions?

Are you talking about the differences between the 5300 and 5301?

Well, the original 5300 Victorian mansion has patterned wallpapers in every room that covered the entire wall, rather than just a border design on the 5301.

The 5300 has window boxes on the ground and 1st floors whereas the 5301 only has window boxes on the ground floor.

The first and second floor on the 5301 are larger and have a recess in the middle to allow easier access to the rooms.

The 5300's dividing walls on the ground and first floor come right up to the edge of the floor and have doorways in them.

The curtains in the 5300 are made of a felt material which was replaced by plastic on the 5301.

The 5300 came with two staircases which are optional on the 5301.

Both have the same steck assembly system which many feel is better and more robust than the system X system used on the latest 5302 Grande Mansion.

Many of us on Playmofriends would agree that the 5300 is far superior to the 5301. It is certainly more detailed and authentic looking and the furniture sets for it are more realistic
and less colourful than the room sets for the 5301, but the 5301 is still a beautiful toy and
I think the design was changed to make it more play friendly with the bigger rooms and easier
access.

I think I've covered the main differences, but if any one else can add anything else to the list please do :)

I have just bought a brand new 5301, all the room sets and extra floor and will be reviewing it very soon. I thought I'd better get it while it's still fairly easy to get hold of. I must say that I prefer it to the 5302 Grande Mansion which I reviewed last June.

The colour change between the 5300 and 5301 is probably what makes it look less realistic and  is what I dislike most about the 5301, but compared to a lot of Chinese made toys, it is a well made and detailed toy that most girls, some boys and some 43 year old men would
love to own. ;)

Hope that helps.

Nice job on stating the differences between the 5300 and the 5301, Roger.  :)9  I think both are very well made and lend themselves to customization.  (I love Steck!   )  Looking forward to your review of your new 5301.  :yup:

It even has a stain glass window. It's comparing apples and oranges though, because it's not victorian, it's modern, and it's cape dutch architecture.

For use as an 18th-century Carribean Island mansion (Governor's house) I've chosen the 5301 over the older 5300, because of the yellow walls with white windows. Those colours ft better with that (sunny) part of the world, imo.
But I did install the brown stairways from the 5300 and also the 5300's red cloth-curtains (a little customzing needed for that).
I think the choice between the 5300 and 5301 depends on what you want to use your mansion for. From a pure collector's viepoint, a mint 5300 has of course a higher value.

The 5302 is totally different and looks too modern for my taste.

too modern?  ??? i don't think it's too modern, the window frames, doors etc... are kinda classic (could be used as victorian) but i don't really like it either  8}

Thanks, guys...I have wanted a 5300
For a while, but have the 5301...with
Prices as they are, unless I find a great
Deal, think I'll just be happy with
What I have...

I recently purchased a 5301 along with the pavilion, staircases, and fence to go with it, but I've yet to open them.  I went with the 5301 mainly because it was a lot cheaper and I was able to find it MISB.  I want to use it as a Georgian mansion (perhaps with a few modifications) as well as a Victorian mansion.  I think the 5300 is a bit more period appropriate for a late 19th century house, but the 5301 looks good for that period too.  Ideally, one would have both along with the new 5300, which would fit in with the late 19th century.

I had to get every possible variety from the 90's after seeing the back of the 7411 instructionswith every possible combination.  ::)
I've also got the expansion floor for the 5301 you know just in case  ;D  -just look at the 5300 expansion floors nowadays.   ;)
