Title: The Tale of Princes Merineith
Post by: conniefrere on December 30, 2011, 23:48:11
Hello PF’s,
One of my favorite themes is the Egyptian one, as a matter of fact al BC themes are my favorites.
I wanted to make some kind of photo story which comprised the Egyptian theme, but not one with only soldiers and war. So I just shot some pics and eventually some kind of story developed into my head. The first pics, and the tale is posted now. The story is a little like a fairy tale combined with Egyptian names, mythology and customs in it, as far as I’m aware of. I don’t know exactly how the stories end or what will follow but I shall try to update the story once a while.
BTW the hymn that I used is part of the Hymns to king Senusret III. Furthermore I’m trying to find out how to make nice backgrounds for future stories instead of the plaster and wood on the walls of my attic.

The Tale of Princes Merineith

As the red dawn slowly rises from beneath the underworld, the riverboat Hapi reaches the shore of the big river Iteru. The pharaoh, on board the ship loaded with the Sarcophagus and all the treasures of his father, sits in silence. The pharaohs ‘thoughts are somewhere else. ‘Did I make the final residence big enough for my father are their enough treasures, are all the correct hieroglyphs to guide him through his journey carved well.’
(http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff509/conniefrere/Egypt/A1.jpg)

While the pharaoh contemplates his worries the people on shore sing a hymn for his father the old-pharaoh:

How the Egyptians rejoice, for you have made their offerings flourish
How the farmers in the presence rejoice, for you have enlarged their shares
How the priests rejoice at your strong arm, for you have protected their traditions
How the nobles rejoice at your activity, for your power has grasped their prosperity
How the two riverbanks rejoice at your dread, for you have extended their domain
How your recruits at levy rejoice, for you have caused them to flourish
How the two lands rejoice at your might, for you have protected their walls

Between the royal Nubian carriers and the guards stood princes Merineith, she was trying to get a glimpse of her father the pharaoh to find out in what kind of mood he was. In her mind she had rehearsed a conversation with her father about the tragedy that happened the day before. ‘How would she tell him all this, he had told her explicitly she had to stay in the palace.’
But she hadn’t.

The day before princes Merineith and her best friend Tuya (BFF we would say today) were both feeding the goats under the old palm tree. The girls chitchatted about things girls chitchat about under a palm tree with no adults around. Also under the palm tree stood Barit the towns camel for long travels to the oases, and on the dead tree Gabu the oldest raven of Egypt who knows everything and understands the tongue of man. If he could speak he told you about the girl’s secrets and come to think of it, all secrets spoken under that palm tree whatsoever.

After feeding the goats the princes and Tuya walked to the town square were Jozef the shepherd and Ameny the village head and father of Tuya are talking about the times when they both were soldiers in the army of the old pharaoh, fighting the invading Hittites. They see the girls approaching and great the daughter of the young pharaoh.

‘Hello dear Mirineith, always a pleasure to have you over,’ says Ameny. If you might wonder why there so informal to the princes, this is because she does not want that kind of formality and wants to be treated as an equal, something here grandfather had told her. Ameny knows this because he was close with the old pharaoh. ‘Stay for diner if you want,’ Ameny says. Merineith gladly accepts because at the palace it is all about the last journey of the old pharaoh.
Djer and Djet stop practicing sword fighting and look how the two girls are welcomed. ‘One day I will marry the prices and become the new pharaoh,’ Djet says to his twin brother Djer. ‘Then we don’t have to fight with sword anymore, but we will be charioteers on the battle field. Djer and Djet the Dynamic Duo is how we will be called. DDDD will become a special hieroglyph!’

At diner, were lentil soup is served, Ameny and Jozef keep blabbing about their heroic deeds. Djet tries to mingle in and tells the two retired soldiers about how at practice he always wins from Djer. Only Merineith hears him brag and giggles. Djet doesn’t notice this and turns his attention to the girls, realizing the men aren’t listening to him.

From behind the Great Sphinx Gabu sees how a pack of robbers slowly approaches the village. There all dressed in black and hungry for gold and jewelry. These robbers are notorious for being extremely barbaric, Panahasi their leader in particular. He is both brutal and wicked. Gabu shrieks and the villagers are alarmed.

And here's some more of the tale of princes Merineith.

While the barbaric Panahasi and his horde approach the market square, Ameny suggests the people to do whatever the robbers says. He adds that there is a small hope there just passing by and only want to harass them for their pleasure. He greets them hospitable, ‘Hello there weary travelers can we offer you something to eat?’
(http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff509/conniefrere/Egypt/A8.jpg)

Panahasi jumps of his camel and taunts at Ameny: ‘You can keep your goat dung you call food and bring me some beer, I’m thirsty can’t you see that.’ To tease and provoke has always pleases Panahasi. When Panahasi sees that he’s been offered soup he smirks and says, ‘Oh excuse me, it’s not goat dung, its camel piss you’re having, ha-ha-ha.’ And all his man also burst into laughter. The villagers are worried even more.

Suddenly Panashi smacks the bowl out of Ameny’s hand, and shouts at Djet:’bring me some beer boy, hurry up now or I will teach you a lesson in hospitality which definitely is not taught here enough.’ All the villagers are silent and wait for what is going to happen. The moment Panashi takes his first sip of the beer.

Title: Re: The Tale of Princes Merineith

Merineith jumps up onto the tree stump and with a stern voice she says, ‘you brute, leave them alone. I’m princes Merineith daughter of Kafa the Just. ‘If I tell my father what mischief you have done to this town he will hunt you down and feed you to the crocodiles when he gets you and your men.’
(http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff509/conniefrere/Egypt/B2.jpg)

Swift as a serpent and still holding his beer without losing a drop, Panashi draws his khopesh and points it to Merineith. ’Ha ha ha silly little girl, I’m not afraid of the pharaoh. Me and my buddies over here are stealth warriors and we take what we want and we don’t get caught because we disappear into the night’, he boasts. Then he kicks over the table with food and cries: ‘Drive the villagers together and bring me their village jewelry box and all the jewelry they have on them…ehm and oh yeah don’t forget the camel we could use another camel.’
(http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff509/conniefrere/Egypt/B3.jpg)

The he turns his attention back to Merineith and he speaks with a malicious voice, ‘And now give me your necklace instead of, I’m going to tell my daddy. And because I’m such a good guy you can keep your tiara’. Although Panashi seems, is, a terrifying and strong man his greatest fear are snakes. He just can’t stand them not even on a picture or a tiara for that matter.

Then like lightening from the blue Djet jumps up between Merineit and Panashi armed with an axe and his little shield. Nobody had paid attention to him, and while the crooks drove the villagers into a corner he had managed to get a weapon. He yells, ’you will not take anything from the princes or our village.’
(http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff509/conniefrere/Egypt/B6.jpg)

Panashi laughs loudly crying, ’finally some valor between these meek lambs, I can appreciate that.’ And from besides Djet one of the villains hits Djet and he tumbles to the ground. All the scoundrels again burst into laughter! ‘Hurray hurray for the hero’, they mock.

After taking all the jewelry, the jewelry box and the princes’ necklace; they slowly walk back to their camels. As was his habit; Panashi had to say something to mock the villagers. ‘Common guys let’s hurry a little we don’t want to misuse their hospitality any longer, it could spoil their appetite’

They all climbed onto their camels, and left the village along with them, Barit, the town’s camel. They drove off in a hurry towards the sphinx. And although they are no stealth warriors as Panahasi claims, they were out of sight into the night in matter of seconds. Piece returned to the village, but an atmosphere of anxiety still plagued them long after.

Ameny praises Djet for his valor, but besides lectures him that he has to think before coming into action. But he’s glad there all save. Then he turns his attention to Merineith and that what was told to Djet, the same counts for her. He asks what she is planning to do, because if she does not report to the pharaoh; he will. He has to, the village was robbed and the criminals need to be caught. Merineith had not said anything about being disobedient leaving the palace and that she really not was allowed to go to the village. She asks Ameny if he will wait to report the crime and that she would tell her father as soon as possible after the funeral.

Now I was thinking of letting you decide how the story should continue from here. Hereunder are three possibilities from where the story, and pics, can continue.

a)   The nightmare that troubles Panahasi in his sleep is; being devoured by a gigantic snake. Could this be clairvoyancy?

b)   Merineith telling her uncle general Khenti if he and his men can do something, without letting her father know.

c)   Merineith telling her father how she lost her necklace; without mentioning the village, and herself being robbed.

How will this continue?

What about Merinieth and Djet sneaking after the thieves that night, and with the help of the faithful camel Barit they steal the things back?
Or Merineth is on her way home dejected and she comes across a ,man she believes is a beggar, gives the beggar a final coin she had hidden from the thieves, and then the beggar asks why she is so sad. She tells the story and the beggar turns out to be a retired military officer fallen on hard times who is incensed that anyone would dare do such a thing with a princess of the realm present, so he decides to go after the thieves himself with the help of a few old friends. He tells Merineth that he will report back to her immediately after the funeral.

Thanks for responding Tim. A twist in the story I did not mention, but I like it a lot. Unfortunately I have no pictures so I'll have to make them. Maybe I'll mingle the "beggar / steal back stories". I will think it over.
