Title: Cheep cheep, figure storage.
Post by: Sir Gareth on September 15, 2006, 13:31:30
I went into my Playmo shed a couple of weeks ago and decided it was in a bit of a mess so I have started to try and reorganise it.  ^-^
My first step was to gather as many loose figures together as possible and put them in one place, normally I would keep them in bags sorted into themes and then just placed inside a box. This is ok in that they are all together but difficult to keep all of the figures hats and any hand held accessories with the figures.
A while ago now at a local carboot I met a seller who ment to Malta a lot, he was selling off figures from Valleta market and he had them displayed  in large egg trays and I thought then how neat it looked. So I recently aquired a few of these trays and found them to be just what I was looking for to sort out my loose figures and keep each one seperate with their accessories rather than all mixed up in a large bag.

The best thing of all is that they where free and they stack very easily and each tray can hold up to 30 figures.

I don't know why, but I just had to laugh when I saw your storing method  :D

But it is not stupid, rather clever actually. And the klickies seem to enjoy it too  :)

I have one small reservation, I've found that storing klickies for a long time in a bending or sittign position seems to weaken their chassis so they then can't stand up completely straight.

This was on old klickies, so it may be that the modern chassis are stronger, but my habit is to store klickies in a fully upright stance.

new chassis are not stronger :(

mostly bend the backpart a bit before put klickie back together
became an habit ;)

I too have found a nice way to store those little people.  I buy plastic compartmentalized ? fishing lure boxes in the sporting good section of Wal-Mart, Kmart.  These boxes are clear plastic with a snap shut lid.  You can put your dividers in to form as many compartments or different sized compartments as you want.  The figures will fit standing up or laying down (anyway they are straight).  Sometimes the taller or top hat with feathers have to be removed and I just drop it in beside the figure.  I store about 4 figures per section and have thirteen sections per box.  Horses can be stored in the longer cubicle if you make it that size, also spears, poles, lances etc. will fit too.  I buy self stick business card holders that are used on the front of notebooks from Office Depot or Office Max (you get a dozen or so per pkg. and they are clear plastic too) and stick this to the outside of the box and then I can insert a card (2"x3 1/2") with writing or pictures or both to identify the contents of the box.  These boxes are then stackable and you have a very clear idea of what is in them.  The boxes cost about $5.00 apiece.  :)

Hope you all will like this idea, I wish I could take pictures for you but I haven't learned how to do that yet and I guess I need a digital camera which I don't have.

Sir Gareth,

Please excuse my haste to add my 2cents to your storage idea,  I am new at this and forgot to ask where do you get these egg savers, as I have never seen one.  Is this a European item or do you go to a farm supplier?  I think anything that helps with the storage of all these little items is a great help to collectors. :yup:

I used to use plastic parts and tackle boxes but they just didn't give me the storage density I needed. My figures unfortunately spend a lot of time in storage and the best compromise for me is to buy small ziploc baggies at a card store or re-use the ones we buy spices in. The 3x5 bag for a single figure and 4x6 for a figure and horse, this way all accessories can be kept with their figure and are protected from jostling by the bag, cost is 1-2 cents and the bags are re-usable. The figures are visible and are then sorted into plastic tubs by theme. But I like the crate idea if you are working on a batch of klickys and they are great for keeping track of parts .
