Brothers' delight at their Playmobil pirate ship sailing to Scandinavia - telegraph.co.uk/

:o

Quote
When brothers Ollie and Harry Ferguson pushed their toy pirate boat into the North Sea, onlookers may have expected it to sink without trace in the choppy grey waters.

But instead the plastic Playmobil vessel named Adventure has travelled hundreds of miles from Scotland to Scandinavia, taking in Denmark, Sweden and Norway.

To their delight of the two boys, those who have found the boat have sent them a message letting them know its latest destination before setting it on its way again.

Wow! That is really cool.
Life's essentials: food, water, shelter and at least one klicky.

Love this, what a wonderful adventure for them.  Hooray for their wonderful parents for helping their curiosity grow, their list of 500 things to do is a great concept.

:picsplz: ... from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Cape Verde...

At that moment the ship suddenly stopped rocking and swaying, the engine pitch settled down to a gentle hum. 'Hey Ford.' said Zaphod, 'that sounds good. Have you worked out the controls on this boat?' 'No,' said Ford, 'I just stopped fiddling with them.' (With thanks to Douglas Adams)

As much as its great for people to put the message in a bottle and cross a item off their bucket list, sending plastic out to sea is a bad idea for the environment.

Playmobil also took a hit in bad press when one of their little models was found on the ocean floor and was the image used to refer to the plastic trash that ends up in our oceans, lakes, rivers and streams.

I'm a fan in sailing a plastic ship, but only if I am bringing it home with me when I am done.

It's a tiny plastic ship, it hardly compares to the real environmental damage caused when actual ships sink and spill fuel and other contaminants. I don't think we're going to see a fleet of such ships being launched given the price of these toys.

Great story! The picture of the ship battling the waves is cool!
I only wish I had read this earlier, then I would´t have had it sunk when it appeared in belgian waters  ;D

Resistance is futile, you will be boarded!
