Title: Ferrovie dello Balconia (part 2)
Post by: Marco_4124 on November 07, 2017, 14:52:06
The Ferrovie dello Balconia moves to a new location

After a few years of have been driving on the current location with my train, business activities are terminated on this site. My parents got an offer to move the caravan from place 49 to 11, and that is further from the highway, along the edge of the forest and some agricultural fields. I do not know how this new spot looks like, and so I have not yet finished a rail plan yet. Meanwhile, at “klusbedrijf HENK” (a small construction company), there is already some gossip because of the upcoming removal.

B — ”Henk, have you read this on Playmofriends?”
H — “What, Ben?”
B — “The Ferrovie dello Balconia is going to move.”
H — “Well, than it is gonna be a busy summer. How large is the new spot?”
B — “I have no idea.”
H — “Then we have to hire a new employee to measure up the new location.”

J — ”Hello, I am Joop and I can measure up the new piece of land.”
H — “Welcome at our company, klusbedrijf HENK.”

H — ”That is some impressive equipment.”
J — “As a survayor, no job is too small for me!”

Today Henk is visiting by a whole group of worried ladies. Kate is afraid that the "Shady Rest Hotel" will no longer get customers as the railway line disappears. Billy-Jo, Bobby-Jo and Betty-Jo worry that the water tower is disappearing. This is their only source of cooling during hot summers, because there is no swimming pool in the surrounding area.

H — “Quietly, I can't answer all questions at the same time!”
K — “What will happen to our hotel now?”
H — “We dismantle the hotel and rebuild it along the new railway line. That is because the ’Ferrovie dello Balconia' has no canteen, where else should we eat?”
B-J, B-J en B-J — “And our water tower?”
H — “The water tower will also be dismantled and rebuilt along the new railway line. That is necessary, because the steam locomotives will continue to drive. Although I do think that you distract the crews too much.”
B-J, B-J en B-J — “Then you just have to build a swimming pool.”
H — “For the time being, there is not enough money for that.”
B — “And also our view not!”

So, these are the first pictures of the new place on the campsite. Winters doesn't look like it at all, and every year I wonder whether it will be something. But that is because our garden architect (= my mother) has not been busy yet. That's always without a plan or sketch, but in the course of time it will become a little paradise again, although she always says she does little work (and I don't believe anything of that). I haven't been on the new campingsite yet, but only when the big tent before the caravan is there can I better estimate how I can drive with the LGB train. But that is work for “klusbedrijf HENK” (my small building company) ;)

I'm sure all will fall into place, Marco, and your mother's "green fingers" will create another little paradise, and even magically find plenty of room for the railway.

It is December and Sinterklaas is in the Netherlands. Of course, the employees of the “Ferrovie dello Balconia” are not forgotten either. First of all, Sinterklaas and his Zwarte Pieten visit the signal box to welcome the employees with the preparations for the new timetable. As Sinterklaas travels further through the Netherlands, he will also come to the portacabin of “klusbedrijf HENK”.

B — “Henk, do you also hear strange rumbling on the roof of our portacabin?”
H — “That could be Sinterklaas.”
B — “Do you still believe in Sinterklaas then?”
H — “No, but I try it every year!”

B — “Good heaven, what is falling through the roof hatch?”
H — “They are all rails!”
B — “Where does all that come from?”
Zwarte Piet — “From Sinterklaas. Sorry for the mess, but there is no chimney on your portacabin! Success with the new railway line and greetings from Sinterklaas.”
H — “I am totally converted.”

It's not often snowing in the Netherlands, so when it's snowing you make use of it right away. Henk and Ben have stopped working on the railway and enjoy a day of snow. Then you will also meet new people. But a lady with pink hair? Are fairies going on winter sports in their spare time?

After careful consideration, Henk and Ben decided not to return the station to its original state. Searching for the old parts not only takes time, but they are also rare and expensive. Nevertheless, a station can be made of the material by "kitbashing". All usable parts are combined with remnants of other kits. Among other things, old CD boxes are used to make new windows in the waiting rooms. But there are also plans to provide lighting. First of all, we need a good foundation.

They are, indeed, rare and can be expensive, so I will watch your "kitbashing" with great interest.

I have some yelllowed platform bits which I think I might try spraying grey as bleaching hasn't worked.

Have you tried the hydrogen peroxide method on them Gordon? I've had good results on light grey with it,  but it is best in summer with stronger sunshine.

I've tried household bleach so far, but with no effect, Tim.  I'm just thinking of trying painting as an alternative, but not ruling out other chemical methods.

Of the items from Germany, a new platform has been constructed. Henk and Ben watch Joop carry out the final checks with theodolite. Everything is then ready to provide the platform with a waiting room.

Is that a space for a fire hydrant at the right hand rear of the platform?

Henk and Ben started right away with their good intentions. Of the items from Germany a waiting shelter has been put together, and some accessories for the platform. There is now a clock, a sign with arrival and departure times and a box with road salt. Now the Netherlands has mild winters, but you never know. The waiting shelter has got new windows and a bench. The windows are made of old CD boxes. The new stop has been given the name Neustad, which reminds me of Neustad an der Saale, where I saw once the last trains on holiday to Bischofsheim an der Rhön. Unfortunately, this is nowadays a cycle path.

Because I want to use the street surface of the platform as good as possible, I decided to put the waiting shelter sideways to the platform. However, the foundation of the waiting shelter is 13 mm lower than the platform. That's why I made an extra foundation from plastic sheet. On top of this is the shelter, and one can walk on street level to the platform. In addition, the street surface of the platform is used optimally.

The station is perfect, Marco.

I have one of the destination signs but can't get the arms to stay out.  I suspect something is broken or missing.

Is the Matra crane a new buy?  It looks very smart.  Nice to see, too, male and female klickies in the railway construction business.  A PA who worked for me for 18 months or so on a temporary contract went to work for a construction firm and was lat heard of working on the construction of the Gold Coast line in Australia.

Where do the workers in the striped tops come from, please?

The Matra crane was bought second hand, cleaned and provided with a new LGB wagon frame.
The Playmobil figures come from Berlin. During renewal of the subway in Berlin they were given as a gift to the passengers. You can find them on the German eBay site (search for "Playmobil BVG").

"Harry & Henrietta Gleisbau GmbH" are busy with their first assignment, which is to restore the old railway bridge. With the assistance of a driver, locomotive and railwaycrane of the "Ferrovie dello Balconia", a repaired bridge section is installed. "Harry & Henrietta Gleisbau GmbH" have taken care of the new abutments of the bridge. These are not yet equipped with turrets and signs on which the shipping can see where the channel is. First, the middle span must be put in order.

Meanwhile, the work continues. The main span of the bridge is finished, and the abutments are equipped with small towers. Both abutments are varnished, and thus resistant to weather and wind. Inevitably, such a large structure attracts interest from colleagues from abroad, and today "Harry & Henrietta Gleisbau GmbH" received a visit from "Big Building Company". During such a working visit, all kinds of experiences and insights are exchanged. After an educational day it is always fun to finish with a nice group photo.

The glass washer is hired to clean the plates attached to the towers of the bridge. These are then visible to skippers and railway staff.

With such a large construction project, there is always a need for new employees. Applicants come from all over the world to help rebuild the "Ferrovie dello Balconia". This week there even came an applicant from Australia! His name is "Puffing Billy", and has the peculiar habit of moving around with a dromedary called a camel in Australia. But people in Australia have more peculiar habits, such as building a railway line right through the Outback (The Ghan) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ghan) or across mountains with a winding railway line (The Great Zig Zag) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithgow_Zig_Zag). Anyway, all help is welcome!

A nice international touch; maybe he could have brought a camel train with him!

But, seriously, there are big rail developments in Australia where the Gold Coast line is being extended.  In the last 12  to 18 months when I was working I had a temporary PA who got a job with Balfour Beatty who were building the extension.  She already had a degree in French and Business Studies and her started studying for a degree related to the construction industry with Balfour Beatty and then went out to Australia to work on the Gold Coast line after she'd completed her degree course.

Yes, Balfour Beatty were providing the catenary system, so not the whole railway.  I recall now that my forner PA's later degree was in Commercial Surveying and she worked on Terminal 5 at Heathrow first and then the Gold Coast line, so/ that would be 2012 onwards.  She was working for me in 2000 to 2002; I retired in August, 2002.

Someone obviously underestimated how popular the line was going to be.

Problems with the crane.

Until now, the sleepers and rails have been transported separately by Harry und Henrietta Gleisbau GmbH and have been assembled on site into sections of railway track. But this is a time-consuming construction method and a logistical nightmare. One of the employees suggested that the sections of track should be pre-assembled at a fixed location, and complete sections of track should be transported to the construction site. The construction of a railway line then goes much faster. Unfortunately, the first attempt did not go quite well. When lifting a pre-mounted section of railway track, the MATRA railway crane tilted forward. The MATRA railway crane proved to have insufficient counterweight. For the time being, construction work has been stopped until a good solution is found.

When hoisting the first section of railway track, it is already immediately going wrong.

The MATRA crane tilts forward and is completely detached from the rails.

Henriëtta signs to the driver of the Ferrovie dello Balconia to stop working for the time being. First, a solution must be found for the MATRA crane.

It needs more weight or outriggers, or maybe if another heavier piece of rolling stock were attached to it.

Henriëtta is visiting Henk to discuss the problems with the MATRA crane while enjoying a cup of coffee. Ballast weights will have to be placed on or in the crane in order to be able to lift heavier loads with the MATRA crane. Henk can reassure Henriëtta: The chief workshop of the Eastern Balcony Railway promised to cut pieces from the ballast weights of Playmobil wagons and use them as ballast weights for the MATRA crane. The promised weights are on their way, so Henriëtta still has to be patient. Meanwhile, Henriëtta is looking around in the portacabin "With which eccentric lord is Ben speaking?” Henk answers: ”That is Isambard Kingdom Brunel (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isambard_Kingdom_Brunel), he is going to make the design for the new tunnel through Box Hill.”

In the background Ben discusses the problems with Isambard Isambard Kingdom Brunel (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isambard_Kingdom_Brunel). Along the route there is a large box with tea and coffee cups, and the train can not drive around it. “No problem," says Isambard, “I am a pioneer in tunnel and bridge construction. By way of exception, I would like to work on a narrow-gauge railway line.” And that is at least, if you know this gentleman, a remarkable decision.

In between the work, we also work on small jobs. The plastic wheels of two wagons still had to be replaced by metal wheels. Pending the update of the MATRA crane, this repair was done. Then everything is in order before we start working on Box Hill.

Today Isambard Kingdom Brunel presented his plan. He showed in a grand way that a tunnel must pass through Box Hill. For example, the owner of the hill can leave his cups on top of the hill and the Ferrovie dello Balconia can reach its destination by train. Henriëtta, Henk and Ben look worried: that's a lot of work. Yet everyone is of the opinion that the tunnel and the train track should be built.

Meanwhile, the construction of Box Hill tunnel continues. Harry & Henriëtta Gleisbau GmbH use a tunnel shield (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunnelling_shield) developed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. This tunnel shield protects workers from collapsing. The final lining of the tunnel wall shall be installed behind the tunnel shield. Luckily Box Hill is not big, and they hope to be ready soon with the digging of the tunnel.

The overhauled crane has been tested today. In the end, two large counterweights and two small counterweights were mounted, so that the overall weight of the crane increased. The first test was an immediate success. Heavier loads can now be lifted and the boom of the crane can be extended further. The coupling hook on the other side of the wagon has also been moved, so that all locomotives can now be connected. During the test, one small problem was discovered: the resistance of the axles in the wheel axle boxes increased. It was decided to replace it with ball bearings. But the goal of the test has been achieved: now preassembled sections of track can be placed ready to go.

This is a memorable day. Today Box Hill Tunnel is opened in a spectacular way. The scene from Queen's video clip (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEjU9KVABao) was repeated thinly. Above the tunnel, Isambard Kingdom Brunel modestly placed a name sign, just like he did with the Royal Albert Bridge. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Albert_Bridge) A little advertising for yourself can never hurt. Consideration is still being given to whether the Ferrovie dello Balconia logo should also be placed above the tunnel. As with any railway, there are still small improvements to be made.

Unexpectedly, the Easter bunny has a surprise for the staff and travellers of the Ferrovie dello Balconia. A wagonload of Easter eggs has arrived. Little Benjamin has already found a place on top of the cargo of Easter eggs. The residents are happy: the Easter eggs look wonderful, and the Easter celebration is now certainly a success.

A mobile model train layout has different problems than a fixed model train layout, but the challenges are no less important. One of the most popular accessories is the Playmobil 4383 level crossing. The design of this level crossing is particularly good because it can be used with metal and plastic Playmobil rails, LGB rails and Piko rails. As long as the level crossing is on a level surface, for example a room floor or a balcony. If the railway is lying in the grass, problems will arise. The loose parts of the road do not stay in place or jump loose when a train passes. Until recently I didn't have a good solution for it, until my father lay a piece of plastic plate underneath the railway crossing. I have worked out this solution in more detail. Finally, the Stainz steam locomotive's track sweepers also proved to be too wide and jammed on the curb of the level crossing. I have ordered extra track sweepers, and shortened them so that the Stainz can now also pass the level crossing. I keep the extra set of track sweepers so that the Stainz can be rebuilt in its original condition.

All the separate parts of Playmobil 4383 level crossing, and the extra plastic plate I made to place under the level crossing.

When everything is mounted, the adjustment is hardly noticeable. Maybe the stripes on the bike path might continue.

The Stainz track sweepers proved to be too wide and jammed on the curb of the level crossing. I have now shortened these. Problem solved.

At the end of the day, the men discuss the results of the day at a picnic table.

The first results are promising, because two fences were placed incorrectly in the past. This provides extra space on both sides of the piece of land. The narrowest part of the piece of land is still two metres wide, spacious enough for the radius 1 curves of LGB. Puffing Billy is less enthusiastic about the terrain itself, it is very uneven and extra sand has been ordered to level the ground. But, all in all, we may even fall short of rails. We are now waiting for better weather, so that the ordered sand can be ridden in. So we will have to be patient for a while.

Editor's message

I have now noticed that my stories about the adventures of the Ferrovie dello Balconia with its staff and passengers are greatly appreciated. Despite the fact that I work very irregularly, and often also work at night, I put a lot of energy into this. The stories appear on 3 forums on the internet in three languages, namely Dutch, German and English. The images are hosted on www.postimage.org. Although I check the option "No expiration", unfortunately images disappear from the story from time to time. Some forums offer the solution to host the images on their own site, but that takes a lot of work for me. That means that for each forum I have to rehost the images and change the BBCode tags in my story every time. Moreover, not every forum has this solution, and deeplinking is not always allowed. Usually if you wait a while, the images will reappear because the provider (such as www.postimage.org) has problems, as long as I am lucky that they don't decide to pay for it. And then it becomes unaffordable for me as well. Moreover, not every forum allows me to change the post afterwards. If you like the stories, I recommend that you print the topic for every full page and convert it into a PDF file. I ask for your understanding.

Greetings, Macro (managing director Ferrovie dello Balconia).

One day, a train arrives at the Ferrovie dello Balconia with a load and a crane. Henk watches in amazement: "Ben, what do you have with you? "Well," replied Ben, "do you remember that we had timber left over during the construction of the bridgeheads? "And what do you mean by that," Henk asks Ben. "I sent it to a joiner, who made it into garden furniture.
After Harry and Henriëtta Schrotter and their staff have helped with the unloading, the garden furniture is tried during the break. Everyone is satisfied, we will have a lot of fun during the summer.

It's a small detail, but today the logo of the Ferrovie dello Balconia is placed above the tunnel entrance. The logo is made by my cousin on a 3D printer, and arrived just in time with my birthday. I am very happy with it, which completes the tunnel entirely  :)

“Koningsdag” (King's Day, April 27, national holiday in the Netherlands) is over again and our handymen from Henk und Henriëtta Gleisbau GmbH are busy. In order to get to and from the work location, the train is used, but no ordinary passenger car can be used. It would quickly become damaged and dirty, which would not make a good impression on the passengers of the Ferrovie dello Balconia. But somewhere behind the locomotive shed was still an old field railway carriage. Wooden benches and a roof are made for this field railway carriage, so that the workers can sit dry even in wet weather. A table completes the whole. Here the workers can eat at the table, or the superintendent can do his administration in between. This is hoisted into the field railway carriage with the MATRA crane. There is still a bit of discussion about how to finish the roof.

Today we have to fit and measure with the staff. The field railway carriage can accommodate six people. It's not a luxury, but it's better than hanging out of the train. The roof has yet to be made, so new boards have been bought today.

Look, that's just a little bit better, and it's safer than hanging on the wagons. It is not a luxury, but you are dry and there is a table available. In order to make the wagon recognizable, the number zero has been assigned.

In the meantime I have given my cousin two Playmobil figures as a present, who are now permanent residents of the Eastern Balcony Railway. As the name suggests, it seems that we have in the family the strange habit of starting a model railway on the balcony.
Anyway, one of the klicky's works as a volunteer on the Eastern Balcony Railway and is a traveler-friendly type. Today he travelled all the way to Schramberg in the Black Forest to visit the “2. Echtdampf Loktreffen” (live-steam meeting). At a small station he waits for the next train. On a journey you will always meet interesting people, and he would swear that he has seen the man with a black bowler hat and walking stick before. He would like to speak to him, but the man looks rather grumpy. Well, first consult the timetable, to take the next train to new adventures.

As Klicky you like to stay informed about the latest news: you like to read the “Railhobby” (http://railhobby.nl), “Eisenbahn Kurier” (https://www.eisenbahn-kurier.de), “Model Rail” (https://www.model-rail.co.uk) or maybe even “La Vie du Rail” (https://www.laviedurail.com) or the "Playmobil magazine". For that you can go to a kiosk. Also the place to get a cup of coffee, tea or soft drink, supplemented with a filled cake or Smarties. In any case, you can always go to a kiosk for small things like that.
Until recently, the "Ferrovie dello Balconia" did not have one, which is why the construction workers of "klusbedrijf HENK" are working hard to set up such a kiosk. Henk watches Ben's leadership of the construction workers from a distance. That is all well and good.
Meanwhile Henk sits in the portacabin behind the computer to place a job advertisement in the local newspaper. The kiosk needs a fun and attractive saleswoman with commercial talent. But it's not yet that far, first the kiosk has to be finished.

Henk watches all the men busy with the construction of the new kiosk.

Meanwhile, at the campsite we are not sitting still. The camping owner has levelled the ground, and there is a large bucket of grass seed scattered. In about 3 days the first grasspieces should appear. Gradually it doesn't look like a wilderness anymore, and the Ferrovie dello Balconia has a good foundation to lay the first rails (Visitors are already asked if the train returns).

Today the first cautious test rides driven through the garden. The garden has just been sown and I can therefore only drive over the mat. My first impression is that the garden is bigger than I expected. I secretly think of radius 2 bends, provided that I can get them second-hand. What is certain is that I need a large number of straight rails. Despite the fact that the grass has just been sown, it soon rises. It is now a matter of having patience before I can build the first railway. In any case, the field railway carriage is a great success.

Unexpectedly we also got a visit from Mister Ed Steam of the Eastern Balcony Railway. Billy-Jo, Betty-Jo and Bobby-Jo were chatting about the layout of the garden. For the occasion the ladies were dressed in an overall. There is still a great deal of work to be done on the green area.

Today, a new tank wagon was delivered by klusbedrijf HENK. The car was offered by the Fat Farlake RailRoad some time ago and was in good condition in itself, but after years of use, some details still needed attention. These include, but are not limited to, the following:
— All parts are disassembled and thoroughly cleaned.
— Replace the parking brake. The plastic was digested and the handbrake broke off during cleaning.
— The stoppers of the boiler have been replaced and are again attached to the frame with a cord.
— There is another rubber hose at the back of the tank wagon.
— The gangway around the filler plug has been replaced. This one is now grey, because a black one was no longer available.
— The plastic wheels have been replaced by metal wheels.
— The ballast weight tray has been replaced. Here a leg had broken off.
— The coupling hooks have been replaced. In both cases the feather was broken.
— Unfortunately, the sticker has been released during cleaning. Another sticker is still being searched for.
All in all a nice addition to the Ferrovie dello Balconia!

Just a few small news items:

— When my cousin bought a new 3D printer, he made my logo of the Ferrovie dello Balconia in order to try it out. This logo was quite large, and for a long time I didn't know exactly what to do with it. Inspired by American billboards along the highways, I made an advertisement board out of it. A little promotion for my railway company is never gone.
— In the locker of the F.F.L.R.R., lied a shabby and forgotten little klicky. With permission of the F.F.L.R.R., he has now joined the Ferrovie dello Balconia. His name is Dick, and he has a lot of fun loading and unloading the freight wagons.
— A little bit of an annoying work is the rebuilding of 43 signal boards. I made these in winter, and I provided the pole with a wooden base. This is fine on a flat room floor, but outside they blow over. So in the spring I made all 43 signposts heavier by adding sink tiles on the wooden feet. Great for a flat balcony, but not in the garden. I am now working on providing all 43 signal boards with a wider foot. See if this can be done in between all the activities.

The first two rebuilt signal boards are now ready and our new employee, Dick, is already busy loading them for shipment to the Ferrovie dello Balconia.

In the photo I showed with numbers the problem with these signposts:
1) The original feet of wood 18x18 mm. From the point of view of model making a nice solution and ideal for a flat house room floor, but as soon as they are on the balcony floor they fall over.
2) Reinforcement of the foot with a small tile. Still a nice solution, and on the flat and reasonably sheltered balcony in my home an excellent solution, but in the garden they do not stay.
3) New wooden feet of 45x45 mm. Not really a model-faithful solution, but a practical one. The signpost will stay up in all circumstances (at least, if the cat would be less curious).

Henk and Ben are worried about the new acquisition of the Ferrovie dello Balconia. It is a locomotive shed of the Fat FarLake RailRoad and somehow it ended up in Zeist. Well, if a freight depot (https://www.flickr.com/photos/wiez/20759662914) from Middelburg can end up in Goes, anything is really possible. The locomotive shed stood on a remote piece of land of the Fat FarLake RailRoad to slowly be forgotten, but they hope to give it a new destination at the Ferrovie dello Balconia. First they try a diesel locomotive to see if the shed is big enough. Even with a lowered pantograph a locomotive can pass through it, so that electric locomotives can also be parked. But there is still a lot of work to be done: overdue painting, new windows and the floor need to be adapted. Nevertheless, Henk hopes to be able to put the locomotive shed back into operation, so that they no longer have to work outside during repair work. On the other hand, the help of Harry & Henriëtta Schrotter will also be needed for this construction work, because Henk and Ben cannot cope with it together. Probably it will be a job for the winter, because they want to get the Ferrovie dello Balconia running first.

Short news, because there is not much to say because of the persistent drought. The new grass on the campsite is growing well, but is suffering from a prolonged drought. Due to the shelter of the trees it has fortunately not yet turned brown, but for the time being I am not allowed to drive to protect the grass.

At the trade fair in Houten I bought two nice acquisitions. A platform indicator and the smallest caboose I have had so far. It is a model of a field railway wagon with a portacabin on it. In between all the mess was also this Playmobil lady, and I was allowed to take her with me. The seller had also played with Playmobil in the past, and hoped that this little lady would find a good new home. That’s a promise!

Meanwhile I put new feet on the last railway signs, and then I draw up a building plan for the locomotive shed.

On the trade fair in Houten I found this platform indicator made of tin, I was also allowed to take the little klicky with me.

“But the trains, they are running again!” (Polygoon bioscoopjournaal, Nederland, 1948)

Although, just as in the reconstruction of the Netherlands after 1945, it is a modest start. This has everything to do with the persistent warm and dry weather of the last few days in the Netherlands. Part of the garden is not sufficiently sheltered by the trees and here the grass suffers most from the sun. For the time being I am not allowed to drive on this section. But compared to the other camping spots, my father is not even allowed to grumble. At least here the grass is not brown.
In the other part I rode the first official train through the garden on July 16, 2018. Although it was a simple oval without switches and with an RC locomotive with short wagons, the fun was no less important. On this part of the garden I can certainly use LGB R2 curved rails, or using 8 straight rail pieces. It's funny that my father is already making plans for a layout. Would the railway virus have struck?

Billy-Jo, Betty-Jo and Bobbie-Jo look down frightened from the water tower when the sunday rest is suddenly disturbed. Downstairs, the construction workers from “klusbedrijf HENK” are busy making a foundation. When Billy-Jo, after her first amazement, asks what the people are doing downstairs, Henk replies that they are making a coal storage. Despite the fact that the Ferrovie dello Balconia operates two steam locomotives, there was still a lack of a coal storage facility. The Ferrovie dello Balconia always required the help of the neighbours, but as the company grows, there is an urgent need to provide the steam locomotives with water and coal themselves. After the conversion of the signal boards there was a lot of wooden planks left over, so they immediately started to build a coal storage.

Due to the constant heat, the work comes to a halt more and more. The coal storage is now being varnished, but the temperature in the house is now so high that the varnish is already drying on my brush. That's also the reason why I haven't started at the locomotive shed yet.
I did work on a small detail: the placing of the undersigns at the signal boards. At Signomatic (https://www.signomatic.be/nl) you can have signs made to your liking, even up to quite small formats. Especially for scale G a tip. For the rest relaxing on my day off and tease the cats a little bit (they think my train tunnel is fantastic!).

Nice attention to detail in the signage, Marco.

Do you have some photos of the cats enjoying the tunnel for us, please?

Quite a number of British railway stations have "celebrity" cats working on their platforms and in their buildings.

Little news:
1) All the signposts of the Ferrovie dello Balconia are now provided with wide feet so that they stay steady in the grass.
2) Ed Steam drove some laps through the garden to try out his locomotive. He took advantage of the opportunity that the Ferrovie dello Balconia was not present!

Protection of a by-pass track / passing track to:

— RETB / BR. Radio Electronic Token Block, as used in Scotland.
— SNCF. Security signs following the french prototype.
— ERMTS. European Rail Traffic Management System, the new european security system. The sign at the switch is like the English example, which is slightly different on the continent.

The new coal storage facility for the Ferrovie dello Balconia is ready. From now on, we will no longer be dependent on other railway companies to replenish the coal reserves of our steam locomotives. The water supply of the locomotives was already assured, at least, as long as the ladies are not swimming! The coal storage is accessible by stairs. On the platform there are 3 compartments for the storage of coal. Depending on the stock of coal, the compartments can be closed with shelves. The topping up will be done with wicker baskets, but in the long run there may also be a small crane.

I own two two-axle Playmobil passenger cars, one of which has the unattractive habit of derailing under certain circumstances. Now, the advantage of a toy manufacturer is that as many parts as possible are kept the same in order to reduce costs. The undercarriage of almost every Playmobil wagon is the same. However, there is a small subtle difference: the old couplings are held in place by a spring, the new ones by a small weight. This has also changed the way in which the movement of the single-axle bogie is limited. A new bogie (the one with the weight coupling) under an old undercarriage swings too far out. The wheels swings then sometimes too far out on the rails, resulting in derailment. On eBay I found a new undercarriage that solved the problems. After assembling the parts, the passenger car looks neat and tidy again!

Playmobil's old undercarriage, but with the new axle holders mounted underneath. The new axle holders have no recess to stick behind the frame, which causes the single-axle bogie to swell too far. Under certain circumstances, this will cause the Playmobil passenger car to derail.

The new Playmobil undercarriage with the new axle holder. With the new frame, two cams are made in the frame. This limits the range of the single-axle bogie. As a result: good running characteristics and the passenger car runs fine again.

Because the passenger car had to be disassembled anyway, it had to be cleaned immediately. Use was made of the opportunity to remove the unsightly NS logo...

Attention asked to support the KNGF in the Netherlands. They train guide dogs for the blind. For completeness I also give the full text, for our Dutch readers of this forum.

Quote
KNGF doppen inzamelactie.

So, it was quiet for a while with news. I had really hoped to be able to play with the train at the new location this year, but as it now looks like it will not work anymore. On the one hand we have been driving too short at work with one driver lately, so I also have to take over some of his duty, on the other hand there has been a small fire on the campsite with all its consequences. Fortunately our caravan has not been damaged, but the site has been closed for a short time due to investigation by the police and insurance companies.

I haven't been sitting completely still either. The enormous amount of wood leftovers I have invite me to make all kinds of things. This time I put together a vegetable garden house. You used to see it everywhere along the railway in the craziest shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, this piece of folklore along the railway lines in the Netherlands has also disappeared. It gave many a railway bed a colorful appearance!

For the rest I am busy with smaller jobs, so almost all wagons of the Ferrovie dello Balconia are provided with the logo of my own railway company. On Marktplaats (= Dutch version of eBay) I bought another LGB wagon for only 17,50 Euro. Remarkable is that the wagon has no inscriptions at all. Error of LGB? But that leaves me free to make my own inscriptions.
My nephew gave me two more switches. I still find a good destination for that. I also have plans to provide Henk and Ben's portacabin with new billboards on the facade instead of on the roof. The portacabin is then easier to transport. From the inventory of the spare parts a flat wagon could be built, on which a container or a car could be transported. In short: for the time being there is still plenty of work to be done!

I have shortened the well-known garden lights on solar energy. They are a bit better at scale. Of course they are not exact scale models, but they are a bit more reliable. The foot is made of a ballast weight of a Playmobil wagon. This way it stays better on the balcony even when it storms.

Easter eggs

There is a hustle and bustle at the Ferrovie dello Balconia. Easter is approaching, and everyone wants to have chocolate Easter eggs in their house before that time. And of course they don't just come into the house, just like the Easter bunny doesn't lay eggs and a chicken doesn't lay golden eggs. Although the latter would be good for the finances of the Ferrovie dello Balconia.

Easter eggs have been made in Santa Claus' bakery for years. You look at that, don't you? Santa's bakery has little to do after Christmas and the holidays, and to increase the work at the bakery, Easter eggs are also made. Santa Claus nibbles around and earns extra money to maintain the sleigh and to take care for the reindeers. He is helped by a girl from the Milka factory in Switzerland, who then comes to the north for a few days. When the Easter eggs are ready they are transferred into Jim’s small mine wagons. Normally he searches for gold at the end of the rainbow, but he also helps to bring the Easter eggs to the Ferrovie dello Balconia transshipment site. So after a long way, the Easter eggs end up at your home's coffee table!

In Father Christmas's bakery, it is a busy time, even after the holidays. Easter requires many Easter eggs, and the necessary orders have already been received.

Using Jim's field track wagons from his gold mine, the Easter eggs are taken to the unloading site of the Ferrovie dello Balconia. There they are collected and so the Easter eggs come to your home!

So, because of the Brexit there was no progress, but slowly the work is starting to come back. To start with, I got a batch of Playmobil RC rails, of which I don't know exactly what I will do with them yet. There was once a connection rail made for normal LGB rails, but this piece of track is hardly to be found anymore. Though, these light RC rails are ideal to take with you for a temporary track.

Meanwhile Henk and Ben are inspecting the rubbish behind the portacabin. There are a lot of spare parts there, but it should be possible to build a complete wagon out of them. In any case, there is still a floor for a flat car, but another superstructure would be much more fun. One missing piece is already on its way from Germany to the handymen in the Netherlands, as far as the superstructure is concerned it depends on my successes on eBay. But let's see what this will yield.

So, the gentlemen from the job company HENK put the undercarriage together quickly. Several undercarriages have already been overhauled and in the meantime the handymen have gained the necessary experience with them. Now there is a work meeting: what will the wagon look like?
— "In any case," says Henk, "we now have a container carrier and with a floor also a flat car." —
— "But what would you like to have?" - asks Ben.
— "A CONLINES car with two yellow boxes." —
Not so strange, this wish of Henk. This car is very popular with the Ferrovie dello Balconia. It can be used to transport anything: sugar bags, Nespresso cups, strawberries, tea bags and noodles. Depending on the season, there is always a cargo for this car and they are always one short.

Ben laughs: "Now you get the big packages that came in the other day. I've known your wish for a long time, and I've already searched eBay for the necessary parts." And so it is easy for the handymen of job company HENK to use the incoming parts to build the container wagon. "We will have a lot of fun from this car," laughs Henk, who is clearly in his element.

A great idea, but is there a plaque on the other side the other way up?

Thank you.

First real driving day at new location

My father had already decided two years earlier not to drive with the caravan because of his age. The possibility of moving to a new place on the campsite, further from the motorway and closer to the forest, was also tackled. For the Ferrovie dello Balconia this also meant that they had to move. The plan was to drive last year, but the new grass wouldn't allow it. The levelling of the ground was disappointing, that was more work than expected, and two heat waves in a row ensured that the new grass hardly had a chance to grow.
But even on this beautiful Sunday at the 2nd of June it did work out in the end. My cousin of the Eastern Balcony Railway was also present, and so was Ed Steam. That had an extra reason, I'm working on a project to make rails on a 3D printer, but more about that later in a separate article.
He had brought a diesel locomotive and also a live team locomotive. After first taking good care of the inner man, hospitality is written with a capital G by my parents, a railway was built and eventually we could drive. I doubted about the purchase of R2 rails from LGB, and my cousin had brought them with him. Then I could try out the layout I had in mind for a long time. Everything was fitting well, the garden is even bigger than I think, and now the R2 rails from LGB are on my wish list.
There was only one small incident on this day. Despite my father's hard work to level the garden, there was unfortunately a hole next to the footpath. I filled it with some Playmobil rails, to make a temporary trestle. Unfortunately the steamlocomotive tipped over after a few laps, which resulted in a small roadside fire and damage to the upper Playmobil rails. Fortunately everything went well. But because some children came to watch, we had to quickly clean up the hot stuff (the ash tray had fallen out of the bottom), where Edwin unfortunately burned a finger.
For the rest it was a very successful day, and we were also able to apply the railway virus to some of the children this time. After all, the youth has the future. Moreover, I have all kinds of plans that are worth developing, and now I also have some ideas for a nice railway plan.

Henk and Ed Steam have known each other for a long time, and it's nice to see each other again. Of course the coffee was already ready in the portacabin. That grass has made way for a tile. It's a bit more pleasant to walk on.

On the left the diesel train of the Eastern Balcony Railway with two wooden open wagons, on the right a passenger train of the Ferrovie dello Balconia.

Ed Steam was busy with the diesel train to get coal for the steam engine. That's quite a job.

Tell me yourself, a steam locomotive like that is a mighty beautiful thing.

Oops, little incident. Henk and Ben inspect the damage to the Playmobil rails. Luckily everything went well.

Children are always a grateful audience, and there are childishly simple solutions for everything. The lack of a tunnel is solved in this way. And hopefully we have made some children enthusiastic again for a nice hobby. I soon lost the remote control.

Hard work gets you warm. But Billy-Jo, Betty-Jo and Bobby-Jo do know how to cool down in hot weather.

A narrow gauge railway has its own charm. Everything in this picture has been made by Edwin, and that should be said.

A wonderful time for all, and some very nice locos and rolling stock.  Thank you for sharing, Marco, and I look forward to more, especially about the 3D-printed rails.

I've been thinking about R2 curves as it seems they would make having a double track layout easier.

The railway plan of 2 June 2019. Pretty simple, but the garden is bigger than I think. The green curves are R2 curves from LGB, which Edwin took with him. The steam locomotive drives better on these curves. These R2 curves are now on my wish list.
In the meantime my father has told me that the nasty hole in the garden has been filled in. That was the place where the steam engine derailed (and caused a small roadside fire).

But I am quite satisfied, this opens up a lot of new possibilities  ;)

P.s.: Just bought a batch of LGB R2 curves on eBay.

Henk and Ben look with great interest at the bright red fire engine that drives in front of the portacabin.
"May we introduce ourselves? We are fireman Sam, commander Staal and Kitty (with megaphone)."
"Well," Henk notes with satisfaction, "we could use a company fire brigade since the EBR is visiting us with live-steam locomotives."
Ben also agrees, "The last roadside fire was difficult for us to extinguish, so we welcome you!"

I used the burned Playmobil rail to make an adapter rail to LGB rails.
Ideal when a short temporary extension is needed.

In Balconia there is little to do at the moment, but nevertheless there was no sitting still. The transition rails have been completely rebuilt: the glue used did not work at all. So I had to sand everything down and use my tried and tested recipe: Bison two-component glue.

Meanwhile, Henk did not sit still and paid a working visit to Madurodam (https://www.madurodam.nl). He really enjoyed the railway company there, but normal gauge is a little too large for Balconia (Madurodam (https://www.madurodam.nl) has a 1:25 scale train layout on 65 mm gauge).

Nice pictures you took! (By the way, I am curious, what's the origin of your railway name?)

"Ferrovie dello Balconia”

The "Ferrovie dello Balconia" is my little railway company that started in 2011 with a second hand LGB starter set. Since it is extended with second hand LGB and Playmobil locomotives and wagons, because new rolling stock is too expensive for me.
The little railway started on my balcony, hence the name "Ferrovie dello Balconia”, but now drives during the summer in the garden on my parents camping site. It is much loved by small, large and very large children  ;)
The layout is always temporary, because I can’t visit the camping site during the winter. I do own some buildings, these are made from wood or plastic and there are even some houses from Playmobil.
I designed my own logo that can be found on some locomotives and wagons. Also my cousin printed my logo on his 3D-printer.

I see, thanks for the detailed explanation! I was curious to know why you opted for an Italian-sounding name.  :)

The Italian name was just chosen because of the nice sound.

That working one and a half meters from each other is not really going to work with Henk and Ben of "klusbedrijf HENK".

For Playmobil figures you must divide by 25.
