Title: Problem with sending emails from Playmofriends
Post by: Indianna on December 10, 2014, 14:47:44
I posted first in this older topic, but then I thought it might be worth starting a new topic to call attention to the issue.  :)
Topic: Not getting emails from Playmofriends (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=13713.0)

It looks as those this is still (again?) a problem.  I recently discovered that an email I sent to a member via Playmofriends some weeks ago never arrived and a couple of test emails today also did not arrive (including one that I tried to email to myself from Playmofriends.)  Also, I noticed that it is not possible to see other people's email addresses though I think that was possible in the past - it would seem that if people are willing to receive emails (as may be designated through one's profile page) they wouldn't mind having other folks see their email address?   ???

If I sent emails I would know if it is working for me. Shall I try to send you something? I need to find the email link, I am fully tech-tarded

Hi Rasputin!
Thanks for the offer - I already know that it has been a problem because of a situation a few weeks ago and then a test when I tried to send an email to myself which never showed up.  More testing is always good, though!  If you go to my profile page (just click on my name in my member info next to this post) and then click on the little envelope that appears on the left side of my profile page and then send a test email.  Let me know when you do it and I will be watching for it.  Thanks!   :xmascheer:

I wish I could help you on this, but I'd say that Sylvia might be the only one who can. If e-mails are just not being sent at all, there might be some problem with how the e-mail backend is set up. I'm not sure how it is organized for this site though.

Thanks Pynedor!  I think you are right - Sylvia probably has to deal with this.  It's easy to get around the problem by not using the email function here at PF but, if people do use it, they may think that others are ignoring their emails.

Still no email from Rasputin (or the one I sent to myself) though here is a mystery -  tonguello sent me a test email which did arrive, though it went to my spam folder.   ???

It's been a couple of months now since I first asked about this problem (and it seems to have been a problem since early last year) - is there any news?  Just wondering . . . .

I got the hosts to check it and their response was that there were no detectable problems with how the server was delivering mail from the website.  ???

In order to work out why it sometimes happens, we'd really need to know which email recipients are not getting the messages from the forum.

I'm wondering if it is specific to certain email providers, e.g. hotmail, gmail, etc. If so, it could be that they have blacklisted us or they have an anti-spam filter which is blocking the messages.

Hi Sylvia!
Thanks for the update and also for looking into this problem!  I will send you the specific information about 2 emails I know of that were generated from here that I did not receive (I did check my spam folder) as well as 1 or 2 that I sent which were also not received.  I can't tell you what the other members' email addresses were, though, as we members cannot see each other's email addresses as listed in our PF member profiles.

This doesn't seem like a critical issue, but it could be a frustrating one if people are sending or expecting emails and sometimes they don't go through.

I've done some testing this afternoon and sent my findings to the Dreamhost support team. Some email messages I sent were unsuccessful and others worked immediately. I've asked them to check their logs in case this can shed some light on the cause and provide a possible solution, I hope. :crossed:

Some new info I received:

Quote
I looked at the issue and found out that your script is using the person
who is contacting you as the sender:

To: daniela.schabenstiel@gmx.net
Subject: Luther sale
X-PHP-Originating-Script: 9972612:Subs-Post.php
From: "cmescn@gmail.com" <noreply@myserver.com>

If anyone is using your script using any popular email providers like
Gmail, Hotmail, Earthlink, Yahoo, AOL, etc, the email will not be sent.
You can view more information about our Outgoing SPAM prevention policy
here: http://dhurl.org/20b

You will need to edit your contact form and use a DreamHost hosted email
as the sender.

I'm not sure if I can fix this as I think it means finding the PHP files which make the email system work and changing some of the code.

Thanks!
Not sure I want to mess with it either. ;)

If you know which page, copy the code and email it - if you want to... You can make a copy of the page and we'll give it a go.

I think we need to put the "from" email from the pf hosted email, and the "reply to" email to the sender's email. It doesn't SEEM like rocket science.... though sometimes it proves harder than what it seems, right?

From where did the code originate? I assume that it was just part of some package that you purchased? :)

I'll have to see if I can locate the file. Shouldn't be too hard. :)

The code is all part of the SMF package. I just install it to the webspace and update it whenever they say it's necessary. Very simple procedure. And it's 100% free. :)

I am not getting email alerts from PF now. I've checked that I am subscribed to the threads but I am not alerted when new replies are posted. :(

Not a huge crisis though!

Well I got an alert again. So it seems that posting in this thread restarts them.

Okay now they are not coming again.
