The Arrival of Otter
« on: May 14, 2015, 11:56:27 »
Part One: The Preparations

Baby Penguin was fed-up with having to use the toddler pool.

He wanted to learn to swim.

'I'm going to invite an otter to live with us,' he said, 'Otters are excellent swimmers, and Otter can teach me how to swim.'

'We need to prepare for Otter's arrival,' said Baby Penguin, 'And the most important thing is to have plenty of water for swimming lessons.'

'I know where there is a lake!' said Brown Bird.

'Er.. that's not a lake, Brown Bird,' said Baby Penguin, 'It might look like a lake to you, but what Otter and I need is deep water.'

'How about this?' suggested Baby B.

'Excellent!' said Baby Penguin.

'But we must make it look more natural,' continued Baby Penguin, 'Otters like natural environments.'

'Flowers!' cried Baby T-Rex in delight.  Baby T-Rex loves flowers.

'Well, Otters normally swim in rivers,' explained Baby Penguin, 'So I think we shoud give the swimming pool the appearance of a river.  No flowers.'

'How about reeds?' said Hyena.

'Yes, reeds,' said Baby Penguin, 'Let's get to work!'

'We must have a Welcome Feast for Otter,' said Baby Penguin, 'Everyone needs to bring a food contribution for the Feast.'

While the others were off seeking food to bring, Baby T-Rex used the opportunity to make sure that there would be flowers when Otter arrived.

He also picked some salad for the Feast.  Baby T-Rex is a vegetarian T-Rex, and his favourite food is salad.

Granddad brought a cake, because he said, 'You can't have a party without cake.'

Hyena brought some meat, but Granddad said that raw meat was not allowed on the table.

Mummy Giraffe helped Brown Bird bring a bowl of seed, and Baby Giraffe brought acacia leaves.

Pyjama Boy brought fries, and 80s Girl brought a bag of cookies, and some cola.

Parrot brought a sunflower, full of sunflower seeds, so Grandad had to remove one of the reeds to accommodate it.

Baby T brought a fern, and Baby B brought some leaves.

Pony brought a bale of hay.

And Pig brought .... lots of things.

Baby Penguin brought fish for himself and Otter.

'We also need a sign to welcome Otter,' he said.

Pyjama Boy could write, so he made the Welcome Sign.

'There are two letter Ts in Otter,' said Baby Penguin, knowledgeably.

'OK, I'll put in another letter T,' said Pyjama Boy.

'Now we only have to fill the pool with water, and bring out the balloons, and we are all ready for Otter's arrival,' said Baby Penguin.

Love the story thus far, can't wait to meet otter.  Can the animals all come over to help me with my pool?  It would certainly make short work of things and make it much more enjoyable!

Part Two:  Otter Arrives!

'He's here!  Otter is here!'

'I can't see him,' said Hyena.

'Oh, dog food stickers,' said Hyena, 'I like dog food.'

'There's Otter!' said Baby Penguin, 'Trapped between two tins.  Let's help him out quickly.'

'Otter, you are very welcome here,' said Baby Penguin.

'And you are especially welcome because you are going to teach me how to swim,' Baby Penguin continued, 'Throw these fish in the water, and then you can teach me how to swim and catch them.'

'Throw the fish in the water?' echoed Otter.

'Yes,' said Baby Penguin.

'Now jump in, Otter, and show me how you catch them,' said Baby Penguin.  The he said,

'Otter, what are you doing? What swimming stroke is that?'

'Sideways stroke,' spluttered Otter.

'Oh, I'm sure I can do that,' said Baby Penguin, 'Look out, I'm jumping in the pool as well.'

'Help! I'm drowning!' cried Otter as he began to sink.

'Hel ...up ... glug ... blub,' bubbled Baby Penguin.

Seeing the emergency, Granddad quickly jumped in the pool, and scooped out Baby Penguin with his cap.

Then he picked up Otter, and carried him to safety.

'You silly Otter,' said Granddad, 'Can't you swim?'

'Er ... no,' said Otter.

'And Baby Penguin, you are not to go in the water again until you have safely learnt how to swim,' said Grandad.

'Now I'll go back into the water and collect all those fish,' he continued, 'And you two can have them on dry land.'

'Here you are,' said Granddad, 'Enjoy your Feast.'

'And tomorrow,' said Granddad, 'I will begin swimming lessons for both of you.'
