Maybe a bit off topic from playmobil, but all about greek mythology and hurting wallets,
There's an amazing board game called Mythic Battles: Pantheon that features skirmish battles with the greek gods, heroes, monsters and troops.
I backed it on kickstarter and received it last month and am really enjoying it a lot. It's kickstarter exclusive but is getting a reprint this spring for a new kickstarter campaign.
All units have highly detailed sculpts and abilities that match how they are in the mythology.
The Hydra regenerates, the Minotaur can charge, Medusa can petrify others, Zeus throws lightning, Hades gets a benefit out of every death, Achilles is hard to kill, Circe turns troops into wolves, etc.
They go pretty deep into the mythology too. Also the game is crazy fun to play. Each player has a god, then you have a certain amount of points to draft in turn a unit untill you run out of points. You win by either killing the enemy god or your god absorbs 4 red jewel thingies on the board called omphalos.
So far I had some great games. I am starting to find some great combinations. One of those easy to learn but difficult to master games with lots of strategy.

Poseidon, Hermes, Artemis, Demeter...
Amazing! :yippee:

Awesome, this is wonderful news!! I got Zeus and Athena as a gift for my Classics-loving boyfriend a couple Christmases ago and he loves them. Can't wait to add to the set!

Will we be able to get these in the States, I wonder?

Clever use of the floral head wreath on Hermes. A nice batch of additional figures.

Will we be able to get these in the States, I wonder?
We had better be able to... i must have them
-
Will we be able to get these in the States, I wonder?
I assume so - with the help from someone there. Or ebay.
-
They look awesome.
Perhaps I should start working over my collegue from Greece :-[
-
You'd think Poseidon would at least be holding a fish or a clam.
-
And Demeter could have been pregnant! Mind you, Athena looks a bit pregnant on that picture...
-
Pink shorts? ???
-
Some of them look great 8}

Pink shorts? ???
I need TEN of them >:D

Thanks for posting that new pic.
Some interesting must-have parts with those klickies!

Just FYI, a lot of people in Greek Playmobil FB pages were complaining for the lack of inspiration/accuracy in depicting the Greek Gods, especially since in the message that accompanies the original announcement, they were supposed to be the outcome of year long studies with cooperation between archeologists and education professionals. For example, Poseidon is a "copy" of Zeus with a trident, Artemis the Goddess of Hunting dressed in pink (!!!) etc. A theory is that the "target group" for those figures is (as most cases) preschool or first grade(s) kids thus they tried to make them as "soft" as possible.
-
Thanks tigana.
I still want them!

Indeed. Though I think it must be one of those "laugh not to cry situations"
More like a 5 mike dip on VERY limited poptubs...

Archeologists with regard to mythical gods and plastic toys? 8}
-
Thanks for the 411 tigana. It's true they're not quite as good as they could be, and I don't blame Greeks for being irritated - after all, it's their culture and they naturally want to see it done well. These gods are obviously being produced after a huge positive response to the Athena and Zeus figures - as I keep saying there's a market for "cultural toys" and Playmo is perfectly set to capture it, if only they paid more attention to accuracy and less to X-TREEM or dumbed down styling.
That being said, they are pretty good, at least for us non-Greeks, and the fact that they exist at all is hugely cheering. They could have been much worse - the degeneration of the Roman theme from its first to its second iteration is an example of how badly things could have gone. Or Don Quixote for goodness' sake! These are nothing as bad as the DQ figure. I look forward to getting my grubby little paws on these guys, and I look forward to further expansion of the line (Aphrodite! Hephaestus! ARES!!!!)
;)
-

Yes, regarding how they should look like according to Greek statues etc.
Or Don Quixote for goodness' sake! These are nothing as bad as the DQ figure.
I heard that Spanish also had similar reaction to us Greeks regarding DQ ;)

;D
Even though it is not widely known to the public, the ancient statues were frequently painted (!) and in several cases there are remains of the color that allow a semi-accurate reconstruction of how the original looked like. After thousands of years, those paints have worn away and we only see the white marble today.

Having said that, the truth could have been worse than the pink shorts, see second image (!!!)

One could simply ask a professor or expert in history or architecture what they should look like, or consult a decent book on the matter ???
-
That Scythian archer is pretty amazing, especially when you think that the design had to be hand woven as the fabric was being made. The patterns on his vest would have been embroidered on, again by hand.
As for the klickies, they're vastly superior to what appears in that new tv series about Troy.
-

I think the issue is that they decided to be cheapskates by making these using existing moulds only. Hermes doesn't have a headband with mini wings. This is like replacing a bonfire with a plate of tea lights. They could have made a brimmed hat with pegs for larger wings to be stuck too. The wings on his sandals are also meant to be a decent size. They could have made clip on wings for his ankles. He also has a particular looking staff which is not well represented by the snake staff he's been given.
I like the figure but he's probably the worst in terms of accuracy.
It's like for films and tv they consult experts on what things should look like for historic settings. Then 99% of what the expert says gets ignored in favour of budget and due to low audience expectation.
-

There's color, and then there's zumba shorts. I have no issue with the use of color on Demeter, though she could use better accessories. I thought Artemis is usually shown in a mid-length chiton, but they went with hot pink hot pants?
A harlequin archer would be interesting to see in Playmobil.
-

I think any of us with a short trip around google and the poptubs could come up with more accurate klickys. Still.. like the PCC was :'(, it IS a step in the right direction.
As for the klickies, they're vastly superior to what appears in that new tv series about Troy.
OT: new series?! What new series?
(I agree about that harlequin archer!)

I didn't even try to watch this... Black Zeus and black Achilles !!!
-

Ah.. Troy: Fall of a City? (googled it)
I see your point. Makes me feel better... Maybe I knew about it before, but discarded it...
Still, some ridiculous black gods would provide interesting parts... Since Poseidon (at least) will need to be redone anyways, that'd be a plus! ;D

Looks like new color variations on animals in the Poseidon set, and that snake cane in Hermes.
-
Thanks tigana for sharing!
-
:thanks: They look even better now! Lots of additional bits, and Poseidon has his fishies! Some of the altars even say "TOY", that's helpful! ;D
-
And is that a blonde bun on... pink Artemis?
-
Some of the altars even say "TOY", that's helpful! ;D
;D :lmao:
I haven't seen it this way till now! The actual meaning of the Greek words IEPO TOY (pronounced "iero tu") is shrine of (where TOY --> of); the name of the MALE god follows.. For female the corresponding word is ΤΗΣ (--> of)
-
They look awesome  hope to get some of them, just Artemis look a bit naked compared to the others :eh?:
-
Thanks for the explanation tigana! I had assumed they labelled them "TOY" to prevent children accidentally worshipping them as real gods! :D
-

???
Wait... playmobil are not gods?!
-
Thanks for the explanation tigana! I had assumed they labelled them "TOY" to prevent children accidentally worshipping them as real gods! :D
Good point.
These should come with warning labels about not using these as actual religious shrines or using the figures as icons.
Something like: Warning, prolonged use could cause spiritual disorientation. In case of emergency please consult your local priest.
-
I like Artemis' deer. But pretty much any of the female archers they have done so far would be a better Artemis.
-
Pics of the back of the boxes are also on THAT site ::)
Saw them on a AmClicks post (link (https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=1793001877424500&id=314111098646926)), as usual.. maybe I shoul work on my spanish
Says price is 3.99 (same as Zeus and Athena before, right?)
So.. is there a wonderful, beautiful, nice, kind and patient greek member organizing a (large?) group purchase? 0)
-

I think that the shipping cost from Greece may prohibit this. It seems that shipping parcels up to 1kgr to Europe is ~23Eu

Uhm.. that is the buyer's problem, I suppose... a shame not all post prices are like the german ones. :(
Getting several people to share shipping would probably be better.
Saw 10 kg = 65 eur (or so).. I think.. But I have no idea.
AFAIK, these will only be available in Greece, right?
-

That would be incredibly stupid. Then again...
-
That would be incredibly stupid. Then again...
The Play & Give were only in Greece.. though this could be different, if it's a theme... right?
Does anyone have a contact to ask? (DO NOT mention we want to give them.. MONEY.)
Maybe we can ask that "collectors" email that was mentioned in the PCC?
-
Yes, Play & Give were only in Greece. Even though, in the advertisement, I didn't see a specific note that the new gods will be Greek exclusives, it may well be the case. I may go to the fun park next week and perhaps I can find out.
Regarding a group order, if someone can organize the money collection and the distribution (!), I can make a bulk order here in Greece and send the package to him/her for further distribution to individual collectors.
-
@ Tigana
As I am used to it... ;)
If no one else volunteers for it, I can do it.
-
Thank you Daniela! ;D

Yes, it could be - can you imagine, everyone wanting to buy them... give them.... MONEY. :-\

You are a glutton for punishment Daniela! (That means "thank you for your kind offer"!)
-
:)
By they way, Tigana (or anyone else), do you know, when the figures will be available?
-
I think it said June...
-
In that case, I would have the possibility to add the collective order to the Lewis Strauss/Rijksmuseum order, if you agree to wait a little longer for your figures.
But it would save you postage.
Let´s see, if we can fix a release time, where the greek figures will be in stock to order.
-
I was told that they may be available in the Funpark next Wed and then gradually to the toys shops in Greece
-
Thanks Theo, will send you a mail and we can check about, okay?
-
I asked via that "collectors" email the pcc mentioned if these would be available worldwide or in Greece only.. no reply yet. But I did send it last night, so.. there's hope!
-
I emailed Playmobil UK on Friday but so far no reply either
Just waiting now
John
-
I was told by Playmobil Greece that they will be Greek exclusives, since no other country has expressed interest in them so far!

I was told by Playmobil Greece that they will be Greek exclusives, since no other country has expressed interest in them so far!
WHAT?! By the GODS.
I would REALLY like to know what's the purpose of playmobil, as a company. Unless THEY run the ebay shops. :hmm:
-
I was told by Playmobil Greece that they will be Greek exclusives, since no other country has expressed interest in them so far!
The Roman-Egyptian theme lasted long enough to suggest there's an interest in these ancient cultures. The same consumer base would buy the Greek sets, the ancient Greeks are pretty well known across most of the world where playmobil is currently sold.
Why do they have to over complicate things?
-
  :wall:
-
There WILL be 6 gods now, right? The new 4 and Zeus & Athena with the "history" box, instead of the "play & give" version? At least, that was my understanding...
-
Yes, the 4 new Gods are NOT a "play & give"...
-
Yes, the 4 new Gods are NOT a "play & give"...
I know.. what I mean was there are new versions of Zeus and Athena, NOT as "play & give", but "history" (like the 4 new ones).. Right?
As shown on the first post image:

;D I see now... Well I suppose, we will find out in a couple of days

Okay, Theo and me will do the collective order together and I will send the greek gods together with the Lewis Strauss/Rijksmuseum order to save you as much postage as possible!

Trying to decide if they're worth braving Greek shipping prices... *wallet screams in the background*
-
Ismene, I really cannot say it, but I suppose, it will come in the end to 2-5 Euro for each of you.
Just to give you a hint.
And if you find it too much, after I have sent you your invoice, you can just cancle it and nothing has happened. ;)
-
I would love to apply to this collective order but i still have to write a few more posts :wall:
-
Shipping costs from Greece can be calculated in http://www.elta.gr/en-us/calculatepostage.aspx
The cost, for priority A (air mail with tracking) roughly goes as [ 20.91+4.36 * kgr ] for EU countries and [ 23.62+5.64 * kgr] for the rest of the world
-

Thanks for the estimate. That doesn't sound too shocking.

Just had a thought - wouldn't it be great if they did EGYPTIAN gods? :prays:
-
Ye Gods, that would be great! There are a lot of possibilities there!
Mind you, they've already done the rabbit-headed God, Bunnis. Just need to substitute a jackal's head and you have Anubis!

Because it's easier to ignore an email than a phone call.
